STILLWATER, OK- (Oct. 1, 2016) Thousands will make the pilgrimage to Stillwater for OSU Football homecoming this month. The annual population spike tends to transform Stillwater into a city-wide party, with townies, students and football fans roaming the town in some kind of high-energy pub crawl. What many non-football fans may not realize is that Stillwater venues tend to go out of their way to present live music on game day weekends, especially Homecoming weekend. Anyone can tour Stillwater’s music scene this month with a pair of good walking shoes.
White Buffalo Tavern is Stillwater’s newest venue. The tavern is its own oasis on Perkins Road. This month, GWB is keeping it eclectic with Suede Panther Oct. 6; guitarist JT Perry and country singer/songwriter Melissa Hembree Oct. 13; Tanner Miller, who describes his music as “folksy stories and a lot of honest lies,” will play Oct. 14; and Zac Copeland on Oct. 27.
You can always sit in on a great acoustic set on Wednesday nights at Eskimo Joe’s. They have been bringing in the area’s best songwriters and guitarists for this laid-back, music-focused ritual.
Partying on the Strip, Stillwater’s entertainment district on Washington Street, is one of the town’s most time-honored traditions, and the Strip has a lot of live music to offer this October.
For months, an extended group of professional musicians has been coming together at the College Bar on the Strip to improvise an electric mix of jazz, punk and imagination . They call it Funk-N-Beers Night, and it starts every Thursday in October at 10:15.
Willie’s Saloon on the Strip has become the local go-to for live music. Meanwhile, the saloon’s patrons are coming to understand that there is more original music in our area than maybe anyone realized. Enid’s Backwater Creek will play Willie’s Saturday Oct.1; Funk You on Oct. 4; Stillwater’s Quakefield will perform their alternative folk Oct. 6; and rocker Sunny Ledford will play Oct. 7.
Jesse Aycock will play Willie’s Oct. 11; Red Grass String Band will bring their bluegrass sound on Oct. 15; The Cody Jasper Band will bring their own version of outlaw country to the Strip Oct. 18; and Wink Burcham will play Oct. 21. The week of Homecoming, Stillwater’s Tequila Kim will be singing Oct. 25, and musical comedy act, Hosty Duo, will play Oct. 29.
Zanotti’s Wine Bar is a part of the downtown nightlife in Stillwater: A little more metropolitan and a lot more grown-up. Zanotti’s is presenting live music all October. On Oct 4. and 18 Mike Thompson will perform instrumental jazz; Singer/songwriter Tania Warnock will play Oct. 7; and solo artist Bruce Benson plays on Oct 14. Scott Carson is playing his original Red Dirt music Oct 21, and Bruce Benson comes back to Zanotti’ Oct. 28.
Friday Oct. 28 is also Walkaround night on OSU campus: It’s like a parade, but the audience does the walking while the floats stay still. OSU students work for months every year to plan and build these impressive, though temporary art installations. Thousands come out every year to party in the streets for this event.
That evening Cody Canada, Mike McClure, Jonathan Tyler and Kaitlin Butts will play the all-ages Joe State Homecoming Tailgate at the world-famous Eskimo Joe’s Outdoor venue starting at 6pm.
